This form has been recently proposed as a different species, Pinskers´s or Southern Philippine Hawk-eagle [Nisaetus (=Spizaetus) pinskeri], described in 1998 and originally named it as a subspecies of S. philippensis, but as DNA-analyses showed (Gamauf et al. 2005) indicate that it is clearly distinct.
