Media notes
Adult bird still in winter plumage, probing in soft sand for food and finding a crab. Southern New Zealand Dotterel, Charadrius obscurus obscurus. First example of this subspecies on IBC. Very rare, population reduced to 60-65 individuals by 1992, recovered to 150 by 1999 following predator control in breeding areas on Stewart Island. Three wintering populations, this one at Awarua Bay. Elevation: 0 m. Date added to IBC: June 22, 2016.
