Rockhopper Penguin calling in Black-browed Albatross rookery. The Southern Rockhopper Penguin (Eudyptes chrysocome) is the smallest yellow-crested penguin species, weighing only 2–3.8 kg. The western race breeds on the Falkland Islands and on islands off southern Argentina and Chile. As their name suggests, Rockhoppers jump over obstacles rather sliding on their bellies like other penguins. These Rockhoppers were in a mixed rookery with Black-browed Albatrosses on West Point Island in West Falkland. They nest in the shelter of the coarse Tussac grass (Poa flabellata) and undertake arduous journeys up and down the steep cliff face to fish for squid and krill, then bring food back for their single chick. Elevation: 181 m. Date added to IBC: April 1, 2018.
