A member of the C. palmarum group (which see). Monotypic.

Subspecies

Monotypic.

Distribution

Buru, in S Moluccas.

Habitat

Probably the canopy of montane forest, the type series coming from 850–1000 m, and the 2014 sightings at 1300 m (1) and 1330 m (2), respectively; however, it may also require lowland forest.

Movement

No information.

Diet and Foraging

Unrecorded but certainly nectar and pollen.

Sounds and Vocal Behavior

Poorly known. High-pitched shrill calls similar to other members of the genus.

Breeding

No information.

CRITICALLY ENDANGERED. CITES II. Restricted-range species: present in Buru EBA. Extremely poorly known. Originally described from snared birds brought to camp in 1920s, the species was not certainly recorded for almost a century: observations in 1980 suggesting the species was fairly common have been ascribed instead to C. placentis, although it now appears that the latter does not occur on Buru. Four lorikeets seen in 1989 could not be unequivocally identified, but were probably toxopei, while visits to the island in late 1995 and early 2011 failed to record the species (3). However, in Nov 2014 at least two birds were observed and photographed  (1), and the following month, in Dec 2014, four individuals were seen (2). Population estimated to be fewer than 250 mature individuals BirdLife International (2015) Species factsheet: Charmosyna toxopei. Downloaded from http://www.birdlife.org on 17/04/2015. . Threats are poorly understood. There are logging operations on the island, which could threaten the bird by deforestation, but the extensive montane forests remain largely undisturbed BirdLife International (2015) Species factsheet: Charmosyna toxopei. Downloaded from http://www.birdlife.org on 17/04/2015. . Considered Vulnerable until 2000.
