Legend Overview
Introduction
The Russet-throated Puffbird is an inhabitant of lowland wooded areas, but tends to shun dense forest. Its upperparts are largely dark brown, spotted paler on the wing coverts, while the cheeks are pale and the throat is orange. Its white breast is crossed by a single black breast band, while the remainder of the underparts are buffy, with variable barring on the flanks. Over the years, Russet-throated Puffbird has either included the two taxa treated as subspecies of Two-banded Puffbird (Hypnelus bicinctus) , or has recognized them as a separate species, as is done here. Very little has been published on the breeding biology of this species, but like other members of the family Bucconidae, they are known to nest, at least on occasion, in arboreal termitaria.
