Bay Antpitta Grallaria capitalis Scientific name definitions

The Bay Antpittia is a central Peruvian endemic, and is found only on the east slope of the Andes in the departments of Huánuco, Pasco and Junín. This species is fairly common and principally occurs at 1800-3000 m, although it occasionally is found as low as 1525 m. Virtually the entire plumage is a deep rufous-chestnut, becoming marginally darker and browner over the crown, wings and tail, with a white belly and rear underparts, and a pale blue-gray bill. It overlaps in elevational and geographical range with the smaller-billed and brighter plumaged Chestnut Antpitta (Grallaria blakei), and to a lesser extent with the considerably smaller-bodied Rufous Antpitta (Grallaria rufula). Given reasonable views, neither of these two species should be confused with the Bay Antpitta. Very little is known about the Bay Antpitta’s foraging or breeding.
