Legend Overview
Introduction
Nariño Tapaculo is a furtive songbird of mountainous northwestern South America. Ranging from southwestern Colombia to northern Ecuador along the west slope of the Andes, the species inhabits the undergrowth of montane forest between 1600 and 2000 meters in elevation. Very similar in appearance to many other species of Scytalopus tapaculo, Nariño Tapaculo is dark gray above and paler gray below with black barred rufous rear flanks, crissum, and rump. While traditional field marks might fail to distinguish this from other species of tapaculo, Nariño Tapaculo can be identified by its elevational range and its diagnostic song. Most aspects of the biology of this species are undocumented.
