Chestnut-breasted Mountain Finch Poospizopsis caesar Scientific name definitions

Chestnut-breasted Mountain Finch is a large and highly distinctive Poospiza, and is endemic to southern Peru. This species formerly was classified in the monotypic genus Poospizopis, on account of its larger size and more terrestrial habits than other Poospiza. Indeed, in its ground-dwelling habits, it might initially recall an Atlapetes brush-finch. Chestnut-breasted Mountain Finch is mostly found at elevations between 2500 and 3500 m; it is gray above with a long white supercilium and a white throat, which contrasts with the broad rufous-chestnut breast band; the undertail-coverts are also this color, and are separated from the breast band by the white belly.
