A distinct race, as yet undescribed, apparently inhabits S coast of Peru#R. Eight subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution
  • N. p. ambigua Cory, 1915 – Andes of SW Ecuador and NW Peru.
  • N. p. oustaleti Berlepsch & Stolzmann, 1901 – CW & SW Peru.
  • N. p. niethammeri Koepcke, 1968 – coastal C Peru.
  • N. p. fulvescens Berlepsch, 1902 – SE Peru (Cuzco).
  • N. p. pentlandii (G. R. Gray, 1867) – SE Peru (Puno) through W Bolivia (La Paz S to Cochabamba and Potosí) to NW Argentina (S to La Rioja and Santiago del Estero); also extreme N Chile (N Tarapacá), where no recent records.
  • N. p. patriciae Hoy, 1987 – NW Argentina (Salta)#R.
  • N. p. mendozae Banks & Bohl, 1968 – WC Argentina (Mendoza to Neuquén).
  • N. p. doeringi Cabanis, 1878 – C Argentina (Córdoba and San Luis).
