Closely related to C. costae, with which has hybridized; hybridizes also with Lampornis clemenciae. Has hybridized with Eugenes fulgens#R. Described form Selasphorus floresii usually reckoned to be hybrid of present species with S. sasin, and form Trochilus violajugulum probably hybrid of present species with Archilochus alexandri. Monotypic.


SW Canada (British Columbia) S through W USA (E to S Arizona) to NW Mexico (NW Baja California). Winter range highly unsettled, species occurring irregularly S to N Sonora, SE to Gulf Coast of USA, and even N to SE Alaska; sporadically occurs much farther E.
