Buteo jakal archeri

W. L. Sclater

, 1918,

Waghar, Somalia

Forms superspecies with B. augur and B. rufofuscus; all three sometimes considered conspecific, but differ on calls and coloration, showing disjunct distribution. There are records of birds displaying the rufous morphotype associated with the name B. archeri from Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya and even Zimbabwe, with the result that, rather than perhaps a subspecies of B. augur, it has been suggested that B. archeri is nothing more than a rufous colour morph of the present species#R; genetic data, however, are strongly contradictory, suggesting that B. archeri is basal to the clade of Afrotropical buzzards, is not closely related to B. augur or B. rufofuscus, and therefore clearly merits species rank#R. Monotypic.
