Bar-bellied Woodcreeper (Hylexetastes stresemanni)

Taxonomy

French: Grimpar de Stresemann German: Wellenbauch-Baumsteiger Spanish: Trepatroncos de Stresemann
Taxonomy:

Hylexetastes stresemanni

E. Snethlage

, 1925,

Acajutuba, lower Rio Negro, Brazil

.

Close to H. perrotii and possibly conspecific, having similarities in voice and morphology; characters of race insignis suggest possible intergradation between the two species. Has apparently hybridized intergenerically with Dendrocolaptes picumnus in W Brazil, one of few cases of hybridization in suboscines. Three subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution
  • H. s. insignis J. T. Zimmer, 1934 – extreme NW corner of Amazonian Brazil on N bank of R Uaupés and adjacent Colombia (Vaupés).
  • H. s. stresemanni E. Snethlage, 1925 – NW Amazonia, in Brazil from lower R Negro S to R Solimões (W limit unknown); recently confirmed, presumably this subspecies, in E Ecuador#R.
  • H. s. undulatus Todd, 1925 – SW Amazonia S of Amazon, in E Peru (upper R Ucayali), N Bolivia (Pando) and NW Brazil (E to at least R Purus, probably to R Madeira).
