Formerly placed in genus Leucotreron. Closely related to R. epius, R. subgularis and R. mangoliensis. Race taiwanus provisionally accepted, but founded on single, possibly aberrant individual and requires validation#R. Four subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution
  • R. l. taiwanus (Ripley, 1962) – Taiwan (mainly in S).
  • R. l. longialis (Manuel, 1936) – Lanyu Is (off SE Taiwan), and Batan, Calayan and Camiguin Norte (N Philippines)#R.
  • R. l. leclancheri (Bonaparte, 1855) – Philippine Is (except N isles, Calamian Group, Palawan, Basilan and Sulu Archipelago).
  • R. l. gironieri (J. P. Verreaux & Des Murs, 1862) – SW Philippines: Calamian Group (Calauit, Busuanga and Culion) and Palawan.
