Kinabalu population, separated as race erythrophrys (with supercilium, face and throat much brighter rufous, male with blackish chin and upper throat#R), has been considered to merit treatment as a separate species; however, NHMUK possesses material from Kinabalu showing characters of both forms, suggesting that plumage differences may be age-related, and erythrophrys not recognized by most recent authors#R#R, a decision followed here.
