Has been thought to be close to A. vanikorensis, A. pelewensis, A. bartschi and A. salangana; all were formerly considered conspecific. Treated as conspecific with A. bartschi by some authors. Three subspecies recognized.

  • A. i. ponapensis (Mayr, 1935) – Pohnpei (E Caroline Is).
