Form larensis possibly better merged into perijanus; tentatively recognized#R, but further study desirable. Five subspecies provisionally recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution
  • P. c. cinnamomeus Wagler, 1829 – coastal N Colombia S locally to lower Cauca Valley (R Nechí) and lower Magdalena Valley, and immediately adjacent extreme NW Venezuela (S coast of Guajira Peninsula).
  • P. c. persaturatus Haffer, 1961 – Serranía de San Jerónimo in Bolívar (NW Colombia).
  • P. c. perijanus J. T. Zimmer & Phelps, Sr, 1944 – N shores of L Maracaibo, NW Venezuela.
  • P. c. larensis Aveledo, 1998 – W & C Falcón and NW Lara, in NW Venezuela.
  • P. c. venezuelensis Cory, 1913 – S & E shores of L Maracaibo (W Venezuela).
