Has been considered conspecific with M. rufiventris. Race rovumae (usually included in nominate) might be recognized for birds E of C Tanzanian Gregory Rift#R. Races intergrade in Mozambique. Two subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution
  • M. p. pallidiventris (Reichenow, 1885) – Tanzania, S Malawi and N Mozambique; possibly SE Burundi.
  • M. p. stenotopicus (Clancey, 1989) – E Zimbabwe and WC Mozambique.

    Not assessed. Fairly common in N of range; less common or uncommon in Zimbabwe. Possibly present also in E Zambia; further research and fieldwork required.
