vicinity of Lima, Peru.
Some plumage similarities, small size and biogeography have suggested to some authors that this species is most closely related to G. maritima, although fundamental differences in wing and tail patterns may indicate otherwise; moreover, genetic studies#R#R show that the two belong in different clades, any similarities being due to convergence. Has been considered close to G. cunicularia, but this seems unlikely. Older name, Anthus paytensis Lesson, 1837, supposedly applicable to present species but unidentifiable; formally suppressed by ICZN in 1977#R. Three subspecies recognized.
