Hitherto usually treated as conspecific with C. nigrifrons, C. gulielmitertii and C. melanogenia, but differs from melanogenia in characters given under that species, and from nigrifrons and gulielmitertii in its creamy-yellow cheek to mid-belly in male (3); lack of cheek mark in male (3); strongly peach-coloured breast in female (2 vs nigrifrons, 3 vs gulielmitertii); and (vs gulielmitertii only) black vs blue crown (ns[3]). Two subspecies recognized.

  • C. a. ramuensis (Neumann, 1915) – NE New Guinea from E Sepik R to basin of Ramu R and Astrolabe Bay.
  • C. a. amabilis (Reichenow, 1891) – NE New Guinea E from Huon Peninsula to Milne Bay.
