Crimson-fronted Cardinal (Paroaria baeri)

French: Paroare de Baer German: Blutstirntangare Spanish: Cardenilla frentirroja

Paroaria baeri

, 1907,

Rio Araguaya, Goiás, Brazil

See P. gularis (below). Individual with plumage intermediate between this species and P. gularis photographed in Barreira do Campo, in Pará, suggesting rare instance of naturally occurring hybridization; this putative hybrid resembles P. nigrogenis. Race xinguensis has been proposed for species rank#R#R, exhibiting one perhaps major difference (black vs dark crimson central throat, although some males with dark crimson flecks); further research, especially into vocalizations, needed. Two subspecies recognized.
