Individual with plumage intermediate between this species and P. gularis photographed in Barreira do Campo, in Pará, suggesting rare instance of naturally occurring hybridization; this putative hybrid resembles P. nigrogenis. Race xinguensis has been proposed for species rank#R#R, exhibiting one perhaps major difference (black vs dark crimson central throat, although some males with dark crimson flecks); further research, especially into vocalizations, needed. Two subspecies recognized.
