Sometimes considered conspecific with N. maculosa, but ranges overlap and songs are quite different. Both are thought to be closely related to N. chacoensis. Five subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution
  • N. d. peruviana Berlepsch & Stolzmann, 1906 – tropical zone of S Peru (Cuzco), locally N to Huánuco.
  • N. d. agassizii Bangs, 1910 – Altiplano from SE Peru (Cuzco, Puno) S to WC Bolivia (L Poopó).
  • N. d. boliviana Salvadori, 1895 – W Bolivia (Oruro and Cochabamba S to Tarija).
  • N. d. salvadorii E. J. O. Hartert, 1909 – semi-arid subtropical W Argentina (Jujuy and Salta S to Mendoza and W La Pampa).
  • N. d. darwinii G. R. Gray, 1867 – semi-arid steppes of SC Argentina (E Córdoba S to SW Buenos Aires and N Chubut).
