Race inornata formerly placed in Hylophilus brunneiceps. Six subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution
  • P. h. hypoxantha (Pelzeln, 1868) – SE Colombia (Vaupés and Guainía), SW Venezuela (Amazonas) and NW Brazil (S to R Solimões).
  • P. h. fuscicapillus (P. L. Sclater & Salvin, 1880) – E Ecuador and N Peru (S to R Marañón).
  • P. h. flaviventris (Cabanis, 1873) – C Peru from San Martín (possibly from NC Loreto) S to Ayacucho.
  • P. h. icterica (J. Bond, 1953) – W Brazil (upper R Juruá), extreme SE Peru (Puno) and N Bolivia (La Paz, Beni and Cochabamba).
  • P. h. albigula Chapman, 1921 – N Brazil S of R Amazon (from R Purus E to R Iriri and R Xingu).
  • P. h. inornata E. Snethlage, 1914 – N Brazil S of R Amazon (from R Tapajós E to R Tocantins, S of Itaituba).
