Family Hummingbirds (Trochilidae)

Least Concern

Dusky-throated Hermit (Phaethornis squalidus)

French: Ermite terne German: Dunkelkehl-Schattenkolibri Spanish: Ermitaño escuálido

Trochilus squalidus

, 1822,

Ipanema, São Paulo, Brazil

One of the small hermits sometimes separated in genus Pygmornis; present species has the most primitive characters of any member of this group, linking these species with larger members of Phaethornis. Often considered to include P. rupurumii, but morphological characters indicate that species is more closely related to P. longuemareus and P. idaliae (see below). Proposed race maranhaoensis, sometimes considered a full species, has proved to be the hitherto undescribed adult male plumage of P. nattereri. Monotypic.

SE Brazil from S Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo to Santa Catarina; also Iguaçu area (W Paraná)#R.
