Hitherto treated as conspecific with D. anthonyi, but differs (in males) in its flame-red vs orange-yellow crown (3); grey vs white throat (2); greyish-white (yellow-tinged in masawan) vs clear yellow belly (2); scarlet vs orange-yellow undertail-coverts (ns[1]); possibly slightly smaller size (ns). Two subspecies recognized.

  • D. k. kampalili Manuel & Gilliard, 1953 – N, C & SE Mindanao (Mt Kitanglad, Daggayan near Mt Balatukan, Mt Pasian, Mt Kampalili, Mt McKinley and Mt Apo).
