Most closely allied with M. phoenicomitra, M. inornatus and M. roraimae. Five subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution
  • M. f. perijanus Phelps, Sr & Phelps, Jr, 1957 – Sierra de Perijá (Colombia–Venezuela border) and Andes of W Venezuela (E slope of Tamá, in S Táchira).
  • M. f. venezuelanus (Hellmayr, 1920) – N & W Venezuela (Coastal Range from Yaracuy to Miranda and Andes from Lara S to N Táchira).
  • M. f. caripensis J. T. Zimmer & Phelps, Sr, 1954 – NE Venezuela (W Sucre and N Monagas).
  • M. f. flavicans (P. L. Sclater, 1861) – mountains of Colombia (all three ranges) S to E & W Ecuador and N Peru (N of R Marañón in Cajamarca).
  • M. f. superciliosus (Taczanowski, 1875) – E slope of Andes of N & C Peru (Amazonas S to Cuzco).
