Closely related to E. nigrivestis, E. isabellae and E. derbyi. Race paramillo isolated in range from the other populations and morphologically fairly distinct; differences slighter between nominate and race smaragdinipectus. Described form E. ventralis probably a hybrid between present species and E. cupreoventris#R. Four subspecies recognized.

  • E. v. paramillo (Chapman, 1917) – N parts of W & C Andes of Colombia (Antioquia).
  • E. v. vestita (Lesson, 1839) – NW Venezuela (Mérida) and E & C Andes of Colombia (S to Cundinamarca and Huila).
  • E. v. smaragdinipectus Gould, 1868 – S Colombia (C Andes in Cauca) S to Andes of Ecuador (S to Cañar).
  • E. v. arcosae Schuchmann et al., 2001 – Andes of S Ecuador (Azuay) S to extreme N Peru (E Piura, N Cajamarca).
