Previously placed in Hylocryptus and sometimes in Automolus, but genetic data#R#R indicate that it belongs in present genus and is sister to the pair C. rubiginosus–C. rufipectus. Race palamblae known from only few specimens; quantitative analysis may show that it is not diagnosable. Two subspecies recognized.
