Recently split from S. varius#R. Differs from S. castaneoventris in characters given under that species; from S. varius and S. owstoni by its much paler (tawny-tan) underparts (2); much smaller black bib (2); lack of rufous mantle (2); plus (vs S. owstoni) rather smaller size (at least 1) and (vs S. varius) much narrower central crown-stripe (1); and song (if typical, but n=1 so not scored here) involving fast alternation of high- and low-pitched short notes (ns[3+2=5]). Monotypic.
