Picus strictus

, 1821,

Until recently, considered a subspecies in the C. lucidus group of taxa (C. guttacristatusC. stricklandi, C. strictusC. erythrocephalusC. haematribon, C. lucidus and C. xanthocephalus). Most closely resembles C. haematribon and C. lucidus montanus, but differs from both in broad white supercilium (2), broader black postocular stripe through ear-coverts to hindneck (3), brighter yellow crown with a few irregular black streaks rather than any close spotting (female) (2 for montanus; ns[2] for haematribon), brighter red crown (male) (ns[1]), and greatly reduced red on rump (ns[1]); plus (compared with haematribon) yellowish-golden upperparts (3)#R. Two subspecies recognized.
