Family Waxbills (Estrildidae)

Least Concern

Kandt's Waxbill (Estrilda kandti)

French: Astrild de Kandt German: Kandtastrild Spanish: Estrilda de Kandt

Estrilda kandti

, 1902,

Lake Kivu, eastern Africa

Sometimes placed with E. atricapilla and E. nonnula in a separate genus, Krimhilda. Formerly considered conspecific with E. atricapilla. Suggestion#R that nominate race may be better included as a race of E. nonnula (in which it was initially described) and keniensis treated as race of E. atricapilla warrants further investigation. Described race graueri (from Mt Sabinjo, in W Kivu Volcanoes) here synonymized with nominate; may merit recognition (perhaps as race of E. atricapilla#R). Two subspecies currently recognized.
