Sometimes regarded as conspecific with L. brauni and L. amboimensis#R. Races intergrade in Rwenzori Mts (E DRCongo); species sometimes treated as monotypic. Two subspecies tentatively recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution
  • L. l. luehderi Reichenow, 1874 – extreme SE Nigeria (Calabar area) and S Cameroon S to NW Angola (Cabinda) and S Congo (lower R Congo); extreme S South Sudan, NE & E DRCongo, Rwanda and Burundi S to W & E sides of L Tanganyika.
  • L. l. castaneiceps Sharpe, 1891 – extreme E DRCongo (Rwenzori Mts), S Uganda and SW Kenya.
