Until recently considered conspecific with S. laemosticta, but both mtDNA and vocal evidence are against this#R. Differs from S. laemosticta in black of throat not extending patchily to chest (1); paler, greyer vs darker, bluish-slate grey on head and underparts (1); olive-brown vs chestnut on mantle, wings and tail (2); more prominent wing-spots (ns[1]); song of longer duration (from published data#R effect size 3.1, score 2) and slower pace (effect size 5.2, score 3)#R. Proposed races bolivari (C Colombia) and venezuelae (Venezuela) are synonyms of palliata. Monotypic.

Distribution:

N & NC Colombia (N slope of Andes from Cesar S to Córdoba and S in Magdalena Valley to Caldas) and NW Venezuela (W Zulia, Táchira, Mérida).
