Closely related to R. pachyrhyncha, with which has often been considered conspecific, recent genetic analysis reinforcing this view#R, but differs in its maroon vs red forecrown and supercilium, with associated darker colours elsewhere in plumage (2), yellow underwing stripe vs none (3), cliff-nesting vs tree-nesting habit (1), and larger size (from published measurements#R at least 1). Monotypic.
Mexico in Sierra Madre Oriental, occurring in SE Coahuila and CW Nuevo León; in winter also in Tamaulipas and Querétaro.
