Sometimes placed in subgenus Nettion within the A. gibberifrons species-group. Closest living relative formerly reckoned to be A. melleri, but now thought to be A. bernieri. Monotypic.

Distribution:

Mauritius and Reunion. Known from a number of explorers’ accounts#R, and bones#R.

Estimated year of extinction on Mauritius c. 1700; apparently about a decade later on Reunion#R. Demise seems to have been result of excessive hunting.
