Hitherto treated as conspecific with C. notatus and C. moebii, but differs from former in its (in male) blue-green vs bright turquoise-green chin to upper breast (2); royal-blue vs mid-blue sheen on metallic green upperparts (1); (in female) paler, softer-edged grey streaks on underparts (2); paler upperparts (ns[1]); (both sexes) much larger size (published mean bill of nine males 38.0 mm vs of 21 males 30.5#R; allow 3); and significant vocal difference based on few available recordings#R. Differs from C. moebii in its blue-green vs all-purple chin to upper breast (3); royal-blue vs purplish-blue sheen on metallic green upperparts (1); green vs blue-green sheen on upperparts (1); larger size (published mean bill of nine males 38.0 vs of 10 males 33.5#R; allow 2).
