Field Identification
c. 22·5 cm. Chunky green barbet often showing blue or even violet tones, especially in wings , with red on forehead and nape, golden on crown and throat. Compared to formerly conspecific and slightly larger <em>P. franklinii</em> (see Taxonomy comments), <em>P. auricularis</em> (wing of male 88–99 mm, vs 89–107 mm in P. franklinii including P. f. ramsayi) has red nape patch smaller, ear-coverts washed violet, entire throat deep yellow, has thin blackish line from rear of supercilia around head to form collar along junction of yellow throat and green breast, less yellow in ventral underparts and narrow pale yellow-white band across central crown.

Nothing known, although unlikely to be dissimilar to P. franklinii. One recorded with a cicada in the bill.

Not globally threatened (Least Concern). Global population size unquantified, but the species is reported to be common to locally frequent within its overall range, estimated at 42,800 km².
