Field Identification

c. 22·5 cm. Chunky green barbet often showing blue or even violet tones, especially in wings , with red on forehead and nape, golden on crown and throat. Compared to formerly conspecific and slightly larger P. franklinii (see Taxonomy comments), P. auricularis (wing of male 88–99 mm, vs 89–107 mm in P. franklinii including P. f. ramsayi) has red nape patch smaller, ear-coverts washed violet, entire throat deep yellow, has thin blackish line from rear of supercilia around head to form collar along junction of yellow throat and green breast, less yellow in ventral underparts and narrow pale yellow-white band across central crown.

Systematics History

Until recently considered conspecific with P. franklinii, but split proposed on molecular grounds (1) supported by morphological evidence: yellow extending down throat onto upper breast, with much more pronounced narrow blackish upper breastband than seen in other taxa, with a bluish lower border (2); white-flecked blackish vs plain greyish-white ear-coverts (2); blue-tinged black vs greyish-white lower submoustachial area (2); slightly smaller size (effect size for wing –2.86) (2). Monotypic.

Subspecies

Monotypic.

Distribution

SE Laos and S Vietnam.

Habitat

Montane forest, evergreen or moist deciduous, frequently along steep ravines and broken slopes.

Movement

None known.

Diet and Foraging

Nothing known, although unlikely to be dissimilar to P. franklinii. One recorded with a cicada in the bill.

Sounds and Vocal Behavior

Poorly known. Call a hollow “ko-wooo”, repeated regularly; appears inseparable to the human ear compared to formerly conspecific P. franklinii.

Breeding

Nothing known.

Not globally threatened (Least Concern). Global population size unquantified, but the species is reported to be common to locally frequent within its overall range, estimated at 42,800 km².
