Hitherto treated as conspecific with S. albicollis, but differs in its all-black bill with no bold yellow tip (3); slightly less extensive white breast patch (treating this as a plumage character effect size for males –1.1, score 1); bluish vs greenish sheen to black feathering on belly and upperparts (at least 1); arched (“tubular”-looking) feathers of crown continuing the same on hindcrown and nape vs becoming more flattened (ns); larger bill (effect size for length 1.75, score 1); shorter tail (effect size –0.65, score 1). Monotypic.
