Until recently considered conspecific with A. longirostra and A. dilutior, but differs from latter in characters given under that species, while differs from former in its smaller size (effect size for bill vs geographically closest A. l. buettikoferi –6.72, score 3; race randi larger but n=2); pale grey vs whitish throat (2); pale grey breast with white mid-belly vs yellow breast and belly (3); flame-orange vs vaguely orange-tinged yellow (shade darker than breast) pectoral tufts (3); and higher-pitched song (maximum frequency 6.2–7.2 kHz vs all other recorded races 4.1–5.5; at least 2)#R. Two subspecies recognized.
