Placed in Lalage by some recent authors#R. Sometimes considered conspecific with E. mindanense, E. morio and E. incertum. Validity of race hoogerwerfi uncertain; further study needed. Proposed race marginatum (Buru and Boano) indistinguishable from nominate. Two subspecies currently recognized.
