Family Tanagers (Thraupidae)

Vulnerable

Pearly-breasted Conebill (Conirostrum margaritae)

Taxonomy

French: Conirostre marguerite German: Perlbrust-Spitzschnabel Spanish: Conirrostro pechigrís
Taxonomy:

Ateleodacnis margaritae

Holt

, 1931,

north bank of Amazon at Ceo de Arary, above Parintins, Amazonas, Brazil

.

Originally placed in genus Ateleodacnis, and it has been argued that this genus should again apply to this species and the other lowland conebills (C. speciosum, C. leucogenys and C. bicolor), which as a group have been claimed to be morphologically quite distinct from most highland members of present genus; but morphological#R and molecular#R analyses find no such division. However, present species and bicolor form a clade that is sister to all other Conirostrum, a division corresponding to the use of riverine habitats by the first two species#R. Monotypic.

Distribution:

NE Peru on banks of lower R Napo (sightings to 50 km or more above mouth) and banks of R Amazon (vicinity of Iquitos), E in Brazil to vicinity of R Jamunda (R Nhamundá); isolated population near junction of R Beni and R Iténez (in Brazil known as R Guaporé), N Bolivia and possibly adjacent Rondônia.
