Sister-species of A. nigrocristatus, and often treated as conspecific; the two are largely separated altitudinally, but recently found#R to hybridize in overlap zone at 3100–3800 m in C Peru; nevertheless, present species differs from nigrocristatus in its significantly smaller size (at least 2); brown-black vs jet-black tail and upperparts streaking (2); and much shorter and differently structured crest (3). Two subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution
  • A. r. albiventris (Chapman, 1924) – WC Peru (Ancash S to Ica and W Ayacucho; single specimen from Apurímac).
  • A. r. reguloides (d’Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837) – SW Peru (S Ayacucho S to Tacna) and extreme NW Chile (Arica).

    Not globally threatened. Uncommon to fairly common. Occurs in Pampa Galeras National Park, in Ayacucho (Peru).
