Forms a species-group with L. garrulus, L. domicella and L. lory. Proposed species L. amabilis (Stresemann’s Lory) probably described from aberrant individual of present species from New Britain (devittatus). Three subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution
  • L. h. devittatus E. J. O. Hartert, 1898 – Bismarck Archipelago, SE New Guinea (E from Huon Bay), Trobriand Is, D’Entrecasteaux Archipelago and Woodlark I.
  • L. h. hypoinochrous G. R. Gray, 1859 – Misima I and Tagula I (C Louisiade Archipelago).
  • L. h. rosselianus Rothschild & E. J. O. Hartert, 1918 – Rossel I (E Louisiade Archipelago).
