DNA data indicate that this species is sister to P. maximiliani, with P. fuscus sister to that pair#R. Race mindoensis considered inseparable from corallinus by some authors#R, but appears worthy of recognition#R. Six subspecies recognized.

  • P. s. saturatus Todd, 1915 – Santa Marta massif, in N Colombia.
  • P. s. ponsi Aveledo & Ginés, 1950 – Santa Marta foothills (N Colombia) to NW Venezuela (Sierra de Perijá).
  • P. s. sordidus (Linnaeus, 1758) – N Venezuela (Falcón and Lara E to Miranda).
  • P. s. antelius Todd, 1947 – NE Venezuela (NE Anzoátegui, S Sucre, N Monagas).
  • P. s. corallinus Bonaparte, 1854 – E Andes of Colombia S through E Ecuador to C Peru (Pasco) and Bolivia.
  • P. s. mindoensis Chapman, 1925 – W Ecuador.
