Sometimes considered conspecific with P. divaricatus (which see) and P. cantonensis (which see); very distinct morphologically from both, and differs also in moult and migration strategies; apparently interbreeds with latter in one area of S China. Monotypic.


N Pakistan E to NE India (E to Assam, Manipur and Nagaland), S China (SW Sichuan, W, S & SE Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi, SW Guangdong), Myanmar (S to N Tenasserim) and NW Vietnam (Tonkin); non-breeding S to C India and SE Asia (including Thailand, Laos and S Vietnam).
