Often considered to include O. melanotis as a race, but ranges meet on Panama–Colombia border with no apparent evidence of intergradation#R. Sometimes considered conspecific with O. hyperythrus, O. melanonotus and O. speciosus. At other extreme, race parambae has been considered a distinct species, although it exhibits extensive individual variation; proposed races baliolus (R Dagua, in W Colombia) usually included in parambae#R, and canescens (Loja, in S Ecuador) in erythrops. Two subspecies normally recognized.
