Close to H. bicinctus, and often considered conspecific (see that species). Internal taxonomy poorly known, further study required; proposed race striaticollis (NW Venezuela) may form part of a cline, and here included in decolor. Three subspecies currently recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution
  • H. r. decolor Todd & Carriker, 1922 – extreme NE Colombia (Guajira Peninsula) and NW Venezuela (Falcón).
  • H. r. ruficollis (Wagler, 1829) – N Colombia, and NW Venezuela W of L Maracaibo.
  • H. r. coloratus Ridgway, 1914 – W Venezuela (S of L Maracaibo).
