Until recently considered conspecific with P. divaricatus, but differs in white on forecrown reduced to a narrow line from frons to preocular supercilium (3); broad grey breastband vs all-white underparts (3); darker grey mantle, back, scapulars and rump (1); and shorter wings (effect size −3.74; score 2) but slightly longer and always rather more hooked bill (effect size for males 1.39; score 1)#R. Monotypic.
Tokara Is and Ryukyu Is; recently expanding also to S Japan (Kyushu, Shikoku, S Honshu#R).
