Hitherto treated as conspecific with L. namiyei (which see). Proposed race subrufa (Yaeyama Is), described from non-breeding individuals, is a synonym. Monotypic.

Distribution:

Danjo Is (off SW Kyushu) and N Ryukyu Is (Tanegashima S to Tokunoshima); non-breeding S to S Ryukyu Is (mainly Miyako, Ishigaki, Iriomote and Yonakuni), although some remain on Amami-Oshima#R.
