Until recently considered conspecific with M. macconnelli, but differs#R in its smaller size (effect size based on published data −1.69 for tail, score 1); fractionally darker rufous underparts (1); orange vs black mouth-lining (2); montane vs lowland forest#R (1); absence of intense dawn lek-like behaviour (1); well-differentiated song, a complex jangling rattle with no clear pause at first (at least 2), with notes reaching lower frequencies (ns [at least 2])#R; and common call a series of zipping notes, thinner, weaker and higher-pitched than single buzzy descending qerrr of macconnelli (3). Birds from Cerro de la Neblina (S Venezuela) named as race mercedesfosterae, but characters fall within range of variation of roraimae. Monotypic.
Tepui region of S & SE Venezuela and Guyana, and recently found in adjacent N Brazil#R.
