Hitherto treated as conspecific with V. mikettae (which see). These two, along with V. pulchellus and V. eximius, sometimes placed in separate genus, Smaragdolanius; genetic distance of present species from V. melitophrys is notable#R. Three subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution
  • V. l. leucotis (Swainson, 1838) – S Venezuela (Bolívar, Amazonas) and the Guianas S to N Brazil (N of Amazon, E from R Branco); extreme S Colombia (SE Nariño), E Ecuador and N Peru (S to San Martín).
  • V. l. simplex Berlepsch, 1912 – E Peru (Huánuco S to Ayacucho and Cuzco) and NC Brazil S of Amazon (R Purus E to R Tocantins, S to NW Mato Grosso).
  • V. l. bolivianus Berlepsch, 1901 – SE Peru (Cuzco) S to NC Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba and W Santa Cruz).
